Fake Plastic Flute [Jul. 4th, 2005|07:09 pm]

[Current Music |Radiohead - nice dream]

Fake Plastic Flute, formerly known as OK Flute, formerly known as Steve & Becky, Southampton's second best flute based Radiohead tribute act, played the Talking Heads Candle Club showcase night yesterday, alongside some of Southampton's brightest and best musical talent (including the Jewel-like Megan and the rockin Emma from up and coming indie band http://www.fleeingnewyork.com ).

Had an absolutely fantastic time - such a buzz being up on stage! Here are the songs we played:

Thinking about you
Nice dream
Lucky
The Gloaming
True Love Waits
Karma Police

People said nice things afterwards. Not sure if they were being polite, but we're grateful either way!

Becky and I left the venue in a happy ready-brek style glow discussing plans for the future of FPF, which must surely include addressing tracks from Kid A and Amnesiac, and somehow working the laptop into the set.

Rock and Roll!

OK Flute at candle club [Jun. 29th, 2005|06:38 pm]

A bit of a delayed report, but it looks like the first public outing of OK flute went down pretty well. As usual I stuffed up "Nice Dream" partly due to nerves/forgetting chords, etc. etc., but Karma Police passed without incident. All in all an average performance.

Imagine our surprise, therefore, when we were asked to play a half hour set at the Talking Heads showcase night on Sunday 3rd July.

In a fit of optimism and post-performance adrenaline (and also partly due to the fact that we've not had a chance to air our rendition of The Gloaming yet) we said we'd do it, shortly after which time we considered the logistics involved in making three Radiohead songs last for half an hour.

Time to crack out the old Radiohead chord books methinks. A song from each album, that's the aim!

Come down and see us at The Talking Heads, Portswood Road, Southampton, UK to see how it all ends up.

Coldplay gig [Jun. 28th, 2005|07:03 pm]

[Current Music |Coldplay - Fix You]

Went to see Coldplay at Crystal Palace Sports Arena last Monday night. They put on an absolutely fantastic show, and had the wonderful Supergrass in support, so a top time had by all.

Coldplay were on stage for 1h30mins, which is coincidentally the same time I spent in the queue for the train station after the gig. My faith in human nature was restored when some bloke who lived on the road which hosted the aforementioned queue let me use his loo, making the whole trip back a much more pleasant experience. Made the last train back to Soton with 90 seconds to spare after a mad trans-platform dash at clapham junction.

Got back to my house at 2am which kinda stretched the idea that evening weekday gigs in London are a feasible idea, but on the whole a very fun night out.

The highlights of the night?
1) The song Fix You - unbelievably good live.
2) Hanging out with Gemma.
3) Seeing Supergrass for the second time in as many months.

Two turntables and a microphone [Jun. 4th, 2005|03:54 pm]
Went to see Beck on Thursday at the Hammersmith Apollo. Drove up to Mortlake in London, parked by my brother's flat then took the 15 min bus trip to Hammersmith, not a bad little trip and very doable for the occasional indie excursion to the big smoke.

As for the gig itself, it wasn't quite as rocking as when I saw him on the Odelay tour in 1997, but good fun nonetheless. I guess the crowd weren't quite up for it enough though Beck et. al certainly gave it their best effort and there were certainly plenty of moments of genius.

In it for the money [May. 30th, 2005|03:55 pm]

[Current Music |Supergrass]

Went to see Supergrass at Portsmouth Pyramids last night. It was the fifth time I've seen them and by far the best. This is because:

1st time: Southampton Guildhall - crap acoustics, couldn't hear a word Gaz was saying between songs. Band weren't really up for it, crowd weren't really up for it.

2nd time: Oxford South Park, supporting Radiohead. A slow start, band didn't look like they enjoyed playing second fiddle to Radiohead. Things improved massively after "Moving".

3rd & 4th times: Southampton Guildhall - same as 1st time.

5th time: Portsmouth Pyramids. Much smaller venue, excellent acoustics and sound setup. Band were loving it, full of energy and ready for a summer of festivals, crowd were loving it, they played all their top top songs - a fine time had by all. One of the best live bands in the world.

Tunes [May. 28th, 2005|04:49 pm]

[Current Music |Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic.]

Well a flurry of activity on my Livejournal site, partly because I've just discovered flickr.com, and partly because I'm bored on a Saturday afternoon and I'm meant to be tidying.

I'm listening to Four Tet's new album "Everything Ecstatic" and after a couple of listens I have to say I'm quite disappointed. Maybe it will grow on me. Still, expecting it to be as good as "Rounds" was maybe asking a bit much!

In the same amazon.co.uk package was the new album by Arcade Fire which is quite tremendous.

Last weekend I took it on a family camping holiday in Cornwall but didn't get to do much tunage what with it being quite an anti-social activity. Still, the potential is there. I'd love to get a live set together sometime soon.

Just had a top weekend camping with the family in Cornwall!

Polzeath Beach is one of my favourite places on earth. I could sit and watch the waves there for hours without getting bored.

This May I have been mostly..... [May. 24th, 2004|04:07 pm]
[Current Mood | optimistic]
[Current Music |little kitten space girl]

...not updating my LiveJournal page.

...getting slightly more motivated in work despite boring documentation tasks.

...trying not to surf the web to much at work (d'oh).

...going on a cool surfing weekend in Cornwall with housemate Joe. Very very sunny, great waves, a first for Polzeath (only been going there for 31 years as well!).

...shopping for garden gates.

...buying CDs.

...trying to make cool music.

...failing to make cool music.

...trying to cut down my use of the word cool.

[Current Music |"Long time coming" - Delays]

Cooo, livejournalling - scary!

I decided to start this because I was very entertained reading the thoughts of others on these pages. Just thought I'd throw myself into the mixer so to speak.

Having a boring day at work. Actually am pretty bored of my work. I've been here 8 years. Only a short while left to get out before I become a lifer.

Am daydreaming of making quality ambient chillout tunes.
